Emixa helps GVB on its journey towards data-driven maintenance
With a data-driven approach, GVB is taking steps towards more efficient maintenance of its metros, trams, buses, and ferries. The Amsterdam public transport company enlisted Emixa to implement various data solutions that enhance maintenance processes and provide greater operational insight.
GVB has an ambitious goal: to become the smartest transport company in Europe. A crucial step in achieving this in building a data-driven organisation.
The smart use of data can significantly support one of GVB's key responsibilities: maintaining its fleet. Managing a fleet of 90 metro trains, 200 trams, 233 buses, and 19 ferries presents a considerable maintenance challenge.
At the same time, this also offers great opportunities. Thanks to its large fleet, GVB has access to an extensive amount of maintenance data - the essential resource that makes data-driven maintenance possible.
Unlocking data
The challenge lies in effectively applying this data in daily maintenance operations. A key aspect is extracting data from the SAP system, which is then used for analysis and processing.
Emixa's consultants, who are experts in both SAP and Microsoft, worked closely with GVB's key users and application specialists. Together they developed a data model tailored to the organisation's specific needs, providing a structure that is easily accessible to various departments.
This approach resulted in a data model that brings clarity to the maintenance of different vehicles and assets. With a 'star schema', it is also simple to interpret.
This model, which is updated automatically on a daily basis, provides GVB with real-time insights into the performance and maintenance status of all its vehicles. Thanks to these insights, GVB can make maintenance more predictable, reduce maintenance costs, and optimise operational planning for engineers.
Future-proof operations
Through its collaboration with Emixa, GVB can not only make data-driven decisions but also proactively address potential technical challenges. The result is a future-proof system where data is at the heart of all maintenance activities, minimising disruptions and ensuring reliable transport services.
Inge Keur, IT & Digitalisation Manager at GVB, is pleased: "Thanks to our partnership with Emixa, GVB can now carry out maintenance activities and processes in a data-driven way. The Emixa and GVB teams worked together very efficiently.
